When you have a bank account and you leave town you usually clean out the account, or clean out the box. If you “know” you have not done this or suspect you haven’t, then write the bank and ask if you closed it out. Otherwise, once a year the newspaper will have a list of names of items or amounts of money left behind by people, and you’ll have to show proper ID and describe what you left in the box in order to retrieve it. After so many years and your items or cash not being claimed I think it goes to some miscellaneous fund (can’t remember the name of it)..
I live in connecticut and there is a site called ctbiglist.com. It is just for CT but it’s free. try also unclaimedproperty.org. I think that is free also.
most states have a list on the net that you can get to for free!!!
