Unclaimed money is required to be turned over to the state or held in trust with notification to the state. Each state has an unclaimed money website.
The unclaimed money websites not operated by the state are “real” (as in the money is there) but it’s a scam because they charge you to get the money when there is no need to pay.
If you go through the state’s process there is no charge to you to get the unclaimed money back.
My son went to one site that the state of Texas maintained and he found his name, it was for a paycheck he had forgotten about. You have to give a lot of information out to claim your money. I wouldn’t try it unless it is a government site.
